As we celebrate National Nurses Week, I’ve been reflecting on something many people may not always see about nursing.
Nurses do far more than respond to illness or emergencies. Some of the most meaningful work we do happens long before a crisis ever begins.
Nurses educate.
Nurses observe.
Nurses encourage.
Nurses advocate.
In addition, nurses help prevent complications before they become life-changing.
Throughout my years in nursing, I’ve learned that prevention is one of the greatest forms of care. Small changes in the body can sometimes tell a much bigger story.
Swelling,
Skin color changes
Slowly healing wounds
Nails that thicken
Sensation loss
Imbalances
And changes in the feet may seem minor at first, but they can be early signs of circulation issues, diabetes complications, infection, or declining mobility.
As a foot care nurse and healthcare provider, I’ve seen how preventive care can help protect not only physical health, but also confidence, comfort, dignity, and independence.
Many adults and seniors want to remain active, mobile, and independent for as long as possible. Preventive care plays an important role in helping make that possible. Sometimes something as simple as proper nail care, skin assessment, education, or early intervention can help reduce complications and improve quality of life.
Honestly, nurses are among the everyday heroes of prevention.
We often notice the subtle changes others may overlook. We help patients understand their health. We provide support, education, compassion, and guidance — sometimes during life’s most vulnerable moments.
Nursing is not only about treating illness. It is also about helping people stay well.
This National nurse’s week, reminds me that healthcare is at its best when it combines clinical knowledge with compassion, education, and prevention. Helping someone maintain their mobility, comfort, and independence may seem small to some, but for many people, it can make a tremendous difference in daily life.
At Foot Bliss Wellness, preventive foot care is more than assistance to adults and the geriatric population; it is part of supporting overall wellness and helping individuals continue moving forward one step at a time.
Healthy feet truly support a healthier life.
