February Is Heart Health

Heart Health Begins From The Ground Up

February is recognized as Heart Health Month, emphasizing the importance of caring for one of the body’s most vital organs. As a nurse and foot care provider, I often remember that heart health isn’t confined to the chest; it extends down to the feet.

Your heart tirelessly pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout your body. Circulation can decrease due to cardiovascular or vascular issues; the feet often show early warning signs. Symptoms such as cold skin, numbness, discoloration, swelling, and slow-healing wounds may indicate insufficient blood flow.

These signs aren’t just medical concerns; they also affect personal aspects such as mobility and independence. Oftentimes, foot discomfort, wounds, or decreased sensation can make routine activities such as bathing, dressing, or walking safely more difficult.

Thus, gentle and consistent foot care is crucial. It plays a vital role in protecting overall health, preventing complications, and maintaining quality of life for older adults, people with diabetes, and those with circulatory issues.

In this heart awareness month, take a quiet moment and assess your body from the ground up:

• Check your feet daily

• Observe any changes in temperature, color, or sensation

• Seek professional advice early if you have concerns

Small, mindful steps today can help safeguard mobility, independence, and well-being in the future.

Self-care is compassionate care.
