Breast Cancer Awareness: Why Foot Health Matters During and After Treatment

Posted on October 14, 2026

Every Step Matters. Every Life Matters. 🎀

Each October, we come together to raise awareness about breast cancer, celebrate survivors, support those undergoing treatment, and remember loved ones lost to the disease.

At Foot Bliss Wellness, we believe that caring for your health means caring for the whole person, from head to toe.

One often-overlooked aspect of breast cancer treatment and recovery is foot health.

Our feet support our mobility, balance, and independence. However, certain cancer treatments can change your feet in ways that may affect everyday activities and quality of life.

ㅤ

How Breast Cancer Treatment Can Affect Your Feet

Some chemotherapy medications used to treat breast cancer may damage peripheral nerves, causing a condition known as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).

ㅤ

Common symptoms include:

● Numbness or tingling in the feet and toes

● Burning sensations or unusual sensitivity

● Difficulty sensing heat, cold, or pressure

● Weakness or problems with balance

● Pain or discomfort when walking

Certain treatments may also cause nail changes or hand-foot syndrome, resulting in redness, swelling, tenderness, or peeling skin.

These symptoms do not affect everyone. However, you should never ignore them.

Early recognition and communication with the oncology team can help prevent complications and support appropriate symptom management.

ㅤ

Why Foot Care Matters During Recovery

Completing cancer treatment is an important milestone, but survivorship also means maintaining comfort, mobility, and independence.

For older adults, particularly those living with diabetes, arthritis, or circulation problems, additional foot complications can make daily activities more challenging.

Reduced sensation may make it harder to recognize injuries, while balance difficulties may increase fall risk.

Although routine foot care cannot reverse chemotherapy-related nerve damage, appropriate foot assessments, protective footwear, and patient education can help identify concerns and promote safer mobility.

Foot care isn’t a luxury. It’s an important part of overall healthcare.

ㅤ

Five Foot Care Tips During and After Cancer Treatment

1. Inspect your feet daily.

Look for redness, blisters, swelling, cuts, or changes in the skin and toenails. Use a mirror or ask for assistance if necessary.

2. Choose comfortable, supportive footwear.

Properly fitted shoes can help protect sensitive feet and improve stability.

3. Protect and moisturize your skin.

Use gentle skin care products and avoid applying moisturizer between the toes. Discuss irritated or damaged skin with your healthcare team.

4. Avoid treating corns and calluses yourself.

Reduced nerve sensation makes it harder to feel injuries caused by harsh chemicals or sharp instruments.

5. Report new symptoms promptly.

Tell your oncology team about numbness, tingling, burning, swelling, or changes in your ability to walk. Ask whether professional nail or callus care is appropriate during active treatment, particularly if your blood counts are low.

ㅤ

Early Detection Matters

Breast cancer awareness also reminds us to follow recommended screening guidelines.

Mammograms may detect breast cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment can be more effective.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms every two years for average-risk women ages 40–74. Individual screening needs may differ.

Discuss your personal risk factors and screening schedule with your healthcare provider.

Remember: Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is essential.

Every Step Forward Matters

To every individual facing breast cancer, every survivor rebuilding strength, and every family supporting a loved one: your journey matters.

As a gerontology nurse practitioner, I believe protecting mobility, promoting independence, and preserving quality of life are essential to compassionate healthcare.

At Foot Bliss Wellness, our mission is to promote preventive foot care, patient education, and healthy aging.
